Simultaneous Exhibition at Wilfred Laurier University

I’m happy to announce that I will be giving a simultaneous chess exhibition on March 30th, at Laurier University, in Waterloo. I will be playing up to 30 boards. You can see details at this link. The simul is organized by the Faculty of Science.

I am not aware of such an event being held at a Canadian university before. I hope this is the start of something bigger. It would be great if chess could take on a bigger role in more post-secondary institutions.

I hope you come out to support the event!

    Dear Mark,

Congratulations on what you have done for the game, and subsequently for Canadian chess. That being said, it’s agreeable that we should have more of an academically inspiring chess influence in post secondary schools. As a youth, tournaments were one of the biggest highlights. I recall playing against you on the bus ride back from the North American Championships in New York some 8 or 9 years ago.

Ive recently started a club at Georgian College here in Barrie with the hopes of offering chess to the local public schools as well. I do hope for a chess community in the Barrie area and Id like to reach to surrounding Georgian campuses to pool together the interest north of the city (Toronto).

You are iconic in regards to Canadian “Pride”,any contribution you make to the game is valuable. You are welcome here if you’d like to speak or give a simulation to help define and generate chess interest here in Barrie.

Thank you Mark for your time. Congratulations on your success

    • Dear Paul,

Thanks for your kind words. It’s great to see your efforts in Barrie. I hope this works out over time. I will not be able to come down during my year of professional chess. Other priorities are taking over. A lot of tournaments to come!

    Hi Mark,

Great blog & thanks for bringing chess to Laurier! We’ve had a bit of trouble getting our chess club going, but hopefully you’ll spark some interest. I’ll probably drop by on my way to class. Keep up the fantastic work!

    • Hi Hazel,

Hasan Shodiev is organizing the simul and he is very interested in getting chess going at Laurier. I would suggest contacting him to start something serious there.

Hope you get a chance to drop by.

Thanks for the information. Dr. Shodiev did contact us, but I guess it’s a busy time of year and we haven’t received a reply. There are some lovely posters hanging around the school advertising your simul! Do you need any helping with set-up?
